All of the new signs will be in Northern Virginia, with the sign in Lorton telling southbound drivers how long they can expect it to take to get to Fredericksburg. This kind of technology is only the tip of the iceberg for the push toward “smart traffic” technologies. Computer technology has changed people’s lives since the late part of the 20th century. Now it looks as if our driving experience will follow that lead. Take the GPS devices mounted on dashboards of so many cars nowadays. They are great, but in the not-too-distant future they’ll seem like transistor radios.
