August 16, 2022

Hajra joined Carnegie Mellon University’s MSPPM-DA program in 2020 as a transportation fellow for Traffic21 Institute. Reflecting on her time as a student of Heinz College, she feels honored to have had the opportunity to become a part of the CMU community and be surrounded by some of the best minds under one roof. For someone who deeply cares about how their work impacts society, Hajra says Heinz College turned out to be a perfect fit where she was constantly reflecting and exploring impact of different technological breakthroughs on society at large and how to maximize their social benefits. Her coursework, projects and research mostly centered around transportation and mobility that constantly opened up multiple pathways, especially within the autonomous mobility space which landed her an internship at Aurora, a self-driving vehicle technology company. Since then, she has started to critically understand autonomous driving technology and was able to further expand her research to multi-modal transportation systems including autonomous delivery robots through her research assistantship in the Civil Engineering Department at CMU.

Joining CMU as a Traffic21 fellow truly set the foundation of every milestone that I achieved in graduate school. With the help of this fellowship, I was not only able to explore opportunities on-campus within the space of transportation and mobility, but also assume leadership roles on multiple occasions and carry out multiple community-led initiatives for Pittsburgh community at large.”

Upon graduation, Hajra joined EBP-US as a Data Analyst- Transportation Economics focus and currently working with multiple DOTs, state agencies and other stakeholders to conduct mileage-based user fee socio-economic equity analysis, benefit-cost studies and cost optimization projects.

She hopes her work continues to improve the state of transportation and mobility by making it sustainable, equitable and accessible for communities across the globe.

June 6, 2022

Carnegie Mellon University rising Junior, Ken Huang, started his summer internship at SEPTA on June 6.  Growing up in San Francisco, Ken rode transit and liked that he could get to where he wanted to go without worrying about parking or being stuck in the city’s traffic congestion.

In 2020, Ken came to CMU to learn more about the technical side of transportation, enrolling in the school’s civil engineering program.  He quickly found the Transportation Club and joined.  This past year, Ken joined the leadership team.

During the 2022 spring semester, he participated in a club visit to Philadelphia, where the students visited the University of Pennsylvania (a Mobility21 UTC academic partner) and SEPTA.

During the SEPTA tour, Ken asked lots of questions.  The SEPTA staff person suggested Ken apply to work at SEPTA.  The other club leadership encouraged him to follow-up, which he did.

And now he is working for SEPTA as a summer intern, assisting with engineering work for various infrastructure projects including bus loops/turn arounds.  He is also interested in transit planning and hopes to get some exposure to that as well.

Traffic21 Women in Transportation Fellow Hajra Shahab and Executive Director Stan Caldwell participated in the “The State of Our Autonomous Vehicle Industry” event hosted by Pittsburgh Robotics Network.

Seeing industry leaders in the AV space coming together to discuss the future of this technology and the industry at large was an enriching experience. Hearing from leaders from Aurora, Argo AI, Motional, Waymo, and Locomation about the humble beginnings of this technology to full-scale commercialization and IPO listings speaks to how much the industry has grown in a couple of years. It was also quite interesting to see how each industry leader was or has been very closely affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University, particularly the Robotics Institute and University Professor William (Red) L. Whittaker who happens to have mentored almost everyone on the panel during their time at CMU. Professor Red also received the Pittsburgh Robotics Impact Award for his Leadership and Excellence in Robotics at the event.” – Hajra Shahab

Hundreds more students across the region are now experiencing robotics thanks to innovative teachers and a partnership with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU). Through a two-part pilot series designed by the AIU & Carnegie Mellon, educators developed and piloted a series of robotic activities & lesson plans for special education and life skills classrooms.

Lead schools participating in the pilot included: Baldwin High School, Carlynton High School, Friendship Academy, Hampton Township High School, Northgate High School, Norwin High School, Quaker Valley High School, and Steel Valley High School.

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit project lead, Dr. Heather Moschetta, who also volunteers as a Special Olympics coach, described the importance and excitement of bringing this content to a broader range of students: “It is unfortunate that some of our learners lack access to STEM fields such as robotics. The goal of this project is to make robotics content accessible to students who otherwise may not have had the opportunity. The teachers who participated created amazing activities and lessons that can expand access for many, many students in the future.”

The activities and lesson plans build upon the Emmy-nominated PBS Learning Robot Doctor television series created in 2020 by WQED Media, Robowits, LLC. (a Mobility21 UTC Deployment partner), Carnegie Mellon University faculty and staff, and PA Rural Robotics with support by the  Pennsylvania Department of Education. Neurodiversity Week is March 21 -27 and World Autism Day is April 2.

Carnegie Mellon University students & transportation club members, Donner Kahl and Ibraheem Ameer attended the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“I had the opportunity to listen to and engage with policy experts and industry professionals. For me, one of the sessions that stood out was about mobility in the developing world. The discussion varied from models that have worked previously, introduction of new micro mobility options, to the sustainability of these practices to improve mobility for more people in these countries …I not only got to connect with industry experts but also got this amazing opportunity to become associated with a committee at the conference.” – Ibraheem Ameer

“I met industry leaders in measuring the economic impact of infrastructure developments. Sessions included collaborations between professionals to develop practical community engagement plans for urban transportation improvements. Speakers addressed a range of topics, including discussing the importance of public outreach for automated vehicle adoption. The influence of Traffic21 and CMU was apparent during my conversations with researchers and businesses. Mentions of the institute, university, or professors received nods of recognition and engaging inquiries….The annual meeting acted as a station where I learned about the exciting opportunities and relationships within transportation and from which I can take the line that best suits my interests and abilities…” – Donner Kahl
