CCAC West Hills Center Offers New Toyota TECS Elite Program

Mobility21 UTC academic partner, Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) has announced the launch of a new automotive program available at CCAC’s West Hills Center. The Toyota Technical Education College Support Elite program, a seven-week course designed as an advanced maintenance and general service class following Toyota’s specific requirements for maintenance level certification, will be held June 6 through July 20.  Read more here.

Carnegie Mellon University and CCAC hosted a panel discussion, “The Future of Artificial Intelligence and the Workforce,” which included speakers:  Mobility21 UTC partner and CCAC professor Dr. Justin Starr, Joel Reed of the Pittsburgh Robotics Network, Michael Sebetich of Argo AI, and Mark Kamlet of Carnegie Mellon University.

The panel dispelled common misconceptions of AI and shared how to work symbiotically with AI.

Mobility21 UTC researcher and Community College of Allegheny County Professor of Advanced Technology Justin Starr participated in a panel discussion about the risks and security concerns where AI meets critical infrastructure at the 6th Annual Smart Cities Technology International Symposium.

Metro21 Executive Director Karen Lightman also hosted a panel at the symposium entitled “Smart Isn’t Smart Enough – Redefining the Smart City Through Co-Creative Partnership,” where the discussion focused on how the  pandemic has shone a bright light on the inequities that lie within our communities, particularly low-income communities and communities of color, and we must turn our focus to creating equitable and sustainable communities for all through co-creative partnerships between academia, government, non-profit and the private sectors.

CCAC Hosts Odyssey Day

Mobility21 UTC academic partner Community College of Allegheny County hosted over 75 people at their 12th annual “Odyssey Day,” working with Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) to promote alternative fuel options for transportation.  35 automotive students had an opportunity to listen to speakers, visit with vendors and ask questions about alternative fuels.

This event is dedicated to promoting the use of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and is designed to educate fleet managers, municipalities, school districts and others about cleaner transportation technologies and the important role they play in providing solutions to growing energy and environmental issues. Bob Koch, UTC Faculty from the Community College of Allegheny County, attended the Intelligent Transportation Systems Professional Capacity Building workshop in Tampa, Florida collaborating with other educators and practitioners defining ITS entry-level workforce competencies, and discussing educational goals.  They also looked at training products and strategies to fill unmet educational needs.  He also had the opportunity to network with other educators and practitioners to exchange ideas and best practices in ITS.

CCAC and Greater Pittsburgh Automotive Dealers Association hosted a student automotive competition event at CCAC.  During the competition, Bob Koch, talked to both students and instructors about “Intelligent Transportation Careers” and how these students fit into the workforce with their knowledge and skills they’re currently learning.  They discussed what they can do to help prepare these high school seniors for various transportation careers.  They also talked about various opinions regarding vehicle to V2V, V2I and autonomous vehicles, and what can we do to help them prepare the technicians of the future.
