Pittsburgh roots still run through Chip Ganassi’s racing success

You know the resume by now. Or at least you should. In those 30 years, Ganassi has presided over 16 drivers championships in open wheel and sports car series, four Indianapolis 500 victories and a Daytona 500 win in 2010.

He is the only owner in history to have won the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Le Mans. And he’s been immortalized in the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Novi, Mich…

That collaboration goes beyond just the Steelers, too. Ganassi owned a stake in the Pirates for a while, and he has a relationship with the Penguins and specifically CEO David Morehouse. He said it’s been great for him to be able to reach out to them from time to time to sponge knowledge about topics ranging from contracts to analytics.

Carnegie Mellon University has been a resource for him on the latter front, as well, as have some of the startup companies in what he called Pittsburgh’s “budding” auto industry.
