The development and adoption of self-driving vehicles into society will depend not only on the tech companies creating the autonomous capabilities, but the materials companies designing the vehicles themselves.

Representatives from Covestro, PPG Industries and Bridgestone shared their thoughts during an afternoon panel at Covestros’ mobility summit, RoadTrip 2030, Monday.

Ranju Arya, senior business director at PPG Industries, said the autonomous vehicle industry presents the coatings industry with a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. While the company plans to maintain its focus on providing coatings that protect against the environment and provide vivid color, PPG is now considering how coatings can address issues like the resin used in batteries and the coatings used on AV sensors.
