How will companies create a universal self-driving car language?

Today Ford Motor Company announced a call to action, outlined in a post on its Medium blog, asking self-driving vehicle developers, automakers and technology companies to join forces in creating a universal “self-driving car language.”

Ford, which partners with Pittsburgh-headquartered Argo AI, has already make progress on the language in the form of a “self-driving intent interface.” It’s a light-bar placed at eye-level on the windshield of an autonomous vehicle that provides signals for other road users and pedestrians. The interface aims to promote trust and comfort during the quickly growing process of integrating self-driving vehicles onto roadways.
