100 prototypes will be built using Fiat Chrysler’s 2017 Pacifica minivan, which will be available as a plug-in hybrid. Bloomberg reports Google and Fiat will be free to work with other self-driving car partners (not surprising). The WSJ reported advanced deal talks last week. The company has suggested it wants to be a supplier of autonomous driving hardware/software to automakers, rather than being a car manufacturer itself. Deals with Ford and other automakers could be on the way. Google’s efforts present some competition for Mobileye, whose driver assistance systems have been deployed by Tesla and others to enable autonomous driving features.
