However, India has been more ambitious. The National Electric Mission Mobility Plan (NEMMP) 2020 drawn up a few years back envisages rolling out 6-7 million new hybrid and electric vehicles each year so that cumulative sales touch 15-16 million by 2020. The primary aim of the NEMMP is to help reduce India’s dependence on oil imports, one third of which is consumed by the transportation sector. But the introduction of clean energy in road transport will also help bring down the pollution level in the cities.
