Cruise sends driverless cars out, releases video of it to the public

Cruise LLC has truly self-driving cars — no safety driver — on the streets of San Francisco.

The company said it’s going so well that it hinted at commercializing of the cars sometime next year with the goal of taking the fleet to other major cities.

“We’re starting small with just a few cars, in a few areas of the city and we’ll be expanding to different parts of the city, at different tjmes of day, until we’re operating everywhere in the city,” Cruise CEO Dan Ammann said Wednesday.

Cruise started testing five vehicles last month. There is still a person in the front passenger seat, but they have no manual control of the vehicle. Ammann said he was “lucky enough” to be one of the first passengers in one.
