Aurora announces another acquisition

Autonomous vehicle company Aurora, co-headquartered in Pittsburgh and Palo Alto, announced plans to acquire OURS Technology, a “lidar-on-a-chip” company.

An aurora spokesperson said the 12 new people the acquisition would add to the team will be based out of its Bay Area operations. The company declined to offer financial details of the deal.

In 2019, Aurora acquired Bozeman, Montana-based Blackmore, another lidar company. Lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging, uses tech similar to radar, but with lasers rather than radio waves. The technology helps autonomous vehicles to identify objects from further away.

Aurora reported it is progressing toward its goal to commercialize its technology, first to the trucking industry, and has plans in place to expand its fleet of trucks equipped with its FirstLight lidar tech.
