Aurora acquires lidar company

Self-driving vehicle company Aurora, which is co-headquartered in Pittsburgh and Palo Alto, announced plans to acquire lidar company Blackmore, according to a news release Thursday. Lidar stands for light detection and ranging, and is similar to radar, but uses lasers instead of radio waves.

Blackmore, based in Bozeman, Montana, is an industry leader in the space, according to the release. Aurora said the acquisition will move Aurora further in the direction of its goal to build self-driving tech with a variety of sensor modalities, including cameras, radar and lidar…

With the acquisition, Aurora will gain Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave, a new generation of advanced lidar technology that Blackmore focuses on.
