Apple now has 70 self-driving vehicles on the road in California, expanding autonomous testing

Today, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has confirmed (via macReports) that Apple now has 70 vehicles and 139 drivers permitted to test autonomous vehicles, up from 66 vehicles and 111 drivers back in July.

While Apple is permitted to test autonomous vehicles, it doesn’t have a driverless car permit, meaning the company is still required to have a driver in the car just in case of emergencies.

Interestingly, Tesla, which is known for its Autopilot system, only has 39 vehicles and 92 drivers permitted to test its autonomous fleet.

However, Apple is lagging behind the likes of GM Cruise and Waymo who have 175 vehicles and 457 drivers, and 88 vehicles with 415 drivers, respectively.
